The world’s most hauntingly atmospheric cemetery, Highgate Cemetery, occupies a spectacular hillside site in Highgate, north London. Opened in 1839, it quickly became a fashionable locale for the wealthy and death-obsessed Victorians; who romanticised and positively enjoyed the rituals and artefacts surrounding its occurrence. A wealth of Gothic tombs, mausoleums, crypts, archways, gates, and other stone architecture (along with cunningly placed creepers, vines, shrubbery, and spooky trees) create a fantastically Dickensian scene that seduces billions of tourists each year. Yes you read that correctly. Ninety billion tourists last year alone, and that is just counting the Muggles.
